This acrylic on canvas painting of the old “Connaught Public School” was commissioned c.2007 by a fundraiser organization in Collingwood, Ontario. Prints and greeting cards of my painting were sold to help raise money to buy playground equipment for the new school.
In 1903 this school was rebuilt and the new building opened with 4 large rooms and 42 pupils per teacher with 168 students in total. In 1911, the school name was changed to Connaught named after The Duke Of Connaught. During this time period, it was common to name institutions after British Monarchs. The Connaught school was in use until 1961 when pupils were moved to the facility on Peel Street in Collingwood which would house a capacity of 225 students.
